Magnesium threonate is a relatively new, safe and bioeffective form of magnesium able to cross the blood-brain barrier, that can help to support sleep and brain health.

Studies have shown not all forms of magnesium can elevate levels of magnesium in the brain. However, supplementation with magnesium threonate (also referred to as magnesium L-threonate) has been demonstrated to do so.

Magnesium threonate has been given EFSA approval as a safe and effective form of magnesium up to 2,750mg/day.    https://efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.2903/j.efsa.2024.8656

Suitable for men, women and children (aged 12 and over).

  • A chelated magnesium from Magtein; a patented form of magnesium L-threonate
  • Crosses the blood-brain barrier
  • In capsule form
  • Suitable for vegans

Benefits of Magnesium Threonate

Magnesium is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes meaning it is involved in over 300 processes in your body! In particular, it has a critical role in supporting the central nervous system.

However, studies have shown that in general there is poor penetration of magnesium across the blood-brain barrier. Magnesium threonate has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and elevate levels of magnesium in the brain.

Magnesium supports energy, brain & sleep health

The brain is a significant consumer of energy, and magnesium is a cofactor for ATP (the energy currency of all cells). It is therefore essential for energy production.

Synapses are the connections between brain cells that allow one nerve cell to communicate with the next. It is now known that new synapses can form.

Magnesium plays an important role in synaptic plasticity (the ability of synapses to strengthen/weaken), making it an important mineral for memory and learning.

Magnesium is also a cofactor in the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

What is the difference between Magnesium Threonate & Magnesium L-Threonate?

You might be wondering why some supplements refer to magnesium threonate and others magnesium L-threonate. There is no difference between them, magnesium threonate is just short for magnesium L-threonate.

Which is better Magnesium Threonate or Magnesium Bisglycinate?

Both magnesium threonate and bisglycinate are well absorbed forms of magnesium that can have beneficial effects to overall health. Both are able to cross the blood brain barrier, supporting cognition, relaxation and sleep.  Magnesium threonate is more often used for its brain supporting properties, whilst magnesium bisglycinate is used for sleep and relaxation.
