Over 50

As we get older, our bodies begin change and with that so do our nutritional requirements. Remaining physically active as we age and ensuring adequate intake of key nutrients is paramount to staying healthy.

The ability to synthesise vitamin D by the skin decreases with age and therefore supplementing with a good quality vitamin D supplement, such as our Wholefood Vitamin D3 product, is important to ensure adequate intake of this nutrient.

We have also developed a multivitamin and mineral supplement dedicated to over 50's nutrition called 50+. You can find out more about this supplement below.

Our range of supplements for the over 50s includes a comprehensive vitamin and mineral formula with wholefood nutrients that provides an excellent level of B vitamins to support nervous health and energy levels. It also provides vitamins D3 and K2 to support bone and cardiovascular health, along with immune supportive nutrients. This formula includes a high level of antioxidant nutrients, in particular Coenzyme 10 (CoQ10), of which our ability to produce declines as we age. CoQ10 can be supportive for cardiovascular and cognitive health as well as energy levels. This all-encompassing and synergistic multivitamin is ideal for men and women over 50.

For many years now at Cytoplan we have presented the rationale that there is a nutrition gap in most people's diets, including the Over 50s. The nutrition gap describes the difference between the levels of nutrients the average person is obtaining from a good western diet, and those identified as being needed for optimal health and protection from disease. Micronutrient deficiencies are especially important to consider as we get older as they can increase the risk of frailty and the development of several age-related conditions.

In the over 50s, these nutrients include:

Vitamin B12 - as people age, their ability to absorb vitamin B12 decreases, and deficiency can occur. Many medications impair the uptake of Vitamin B12 from food and the ability of the body to transform this into a usable form.  B12 is essential for the normal function of the nervous system and energy production, as well as many other functions. Cytoplan's sublingual B12 supplement provides the active forms of the vitamin in a rapidly absorbed and bioeffective form.

A decrease in stomach acid, common in older people, can affect the absorption of key nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, calcium and magnesium.

Vitamin D3 - the ability to synthesise vitamin D by the skin decreases with age and therefore supplementing with a good quality vitamin D supplement, such as our Wholefood Vitamin D3, is important to ensure adequate intake of this nutrient. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and build and maintain healthy bones.

Omega-3 fatty acids - these types of polyunsaturated fats play important roles in many processes in the body, including those involving inflammation, immunity, heart health and brain function, and therefore can be very supportive for health in those over the age of 50. Oily fish provide a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and taking an omega-3 supplement can be a quick and convenient way to increase your intake. Cytoplan provide a range of clean and sustainable omega 3 supplements, including those from a vegan algae source.

There are a number of key areas of health that may require extra support in those over the age of 50:

Musculoskeletal Health

Healthy bone density can be supported by providing excellent levels of the key bone health nutrients, including calcium, magnesium and vitamins D3 and K2.

Ageing can also contribute to the wear and tear of the cartilage in our joints, often resulting in pain and stiffness. Here at Cytoplan we have a range of supplements providing key nutrients to support joint health such as Cytoprotect Joint Health, which contains a matrix of type II collagen, chondroitin sulphate and hyaluronic acid, which are the building blocks of cartilage, as well as nutrients that can help to reduce an inflammatory response such as curcumin, Boswellia and omega-3 fatty acids.

Heart Health

The risk of developing cardiovascular conditions is considerable higher in those over the age of 50. Key to supporting heart health is following a healthy diet rich in plant foods, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol intake.

Cytoplan have a range of supplements providing key nutrients to support heart health in the over 50s, including omega-3 fatty acids, which have the potential to lower heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and triglycerides. Vitamin D, CoQ10 and antioxidants have all shown positive effects for cardiovascular health and can be supportive for those over 50.

Brain Health

Optimising brain health is not only important for the prevention of cognitive decline, but also for supporting mental wellbeing, mood, memory, and learning and is often a concern in those over the age of 50. At Cytoplan we offer a full spectrum of supplements to support brain health both directly, and by helping to lessen the drivers of cognitive decline, such as inflammation, sub-optimal nutrient intake and oxidative damage, amongst others. Key nutrients to support brain health as we age include omega-3 fatty acids, the B-complex vitamins and antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins C, E, zinc, and selenium.

CoQ10; a nutrient essential for energy production, is often depleted in individuals with cognitive decline and our natural production declines from around the age of 50. Cytoplan offer this antioxidant in a range of different supplements which are especially supportive for the over 50s.

Skin Health

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and is responsible for the structure, strength and stability of the skin, but as we age, our body's collagen synthesis declines, which can result in visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines. Supplementing with collagen peptides can stimulate the synthesis of collagen and support the health of our skin as we age. Cytoplan provides an excellent range of collagen products which are known to support the integrity of the skin. With both marine and vegan collagen, a choice is available to suit everyone.

Eye Health

Several eye conditions develop with age and are more common in those over the age of 50. Eye-Cyt is a high-potency, targeted antioxidant formula, containing a comprehensive range of nutrients which are particularly beneficial, supportive of, and protective to eye tissue and overall eye health.

Gut Health

Older people can often have a much lower number of friendly bacteria in their gut and can be more prone to gastrointestinal infections and bowel conditions, so it is recommended to support gut balance with a multi-strain live bacteria supplement.

What is the best multivitamin for men over 50?

Optimal levels of all nutrients are important to support male health. Therefore, it is recommended to bridge the nutrition gap with a high quality bioeffective multivitamin and mineral in food-based form. However, the requirement for some nutrients increases as we age. In particular, CoQ10 is important, as it is essential for energy production, cognition and cardiovascular health although levels begin to deplete around the age of 50.

Cytoplan's CoQ10 Multi is the recommended supplement for men over 50 as it includes optimal levels of all nutrients as well as CoQ10. It also has low levels of iron, which is important for older men as they typically have a lower requirement.

Additionally, to support optimal wellness, it is also useful to include additional nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids and support digestive function with a multi-strain live bacteria supplement.

What is the best multivitamin for women over 50 going through menopause?

Optimal levels of all nutrients are important to support female health as we age. Therefore, it is recommended to bridge the nutrition gap with a high quality bioeffective multivitamin and mineral supplement in food-based form. Cytoplan's CoQ10 multi is the recommended supplement for women over 50 as it includes optimal levels of all nutrients as well as CoQ10; an antioxidant nutrient needed for energy production, cognition and cardiovascular health. Our levels of CoQ10 begin to deplete around the age of 50. CoQ10 Multi also has low levels of iron, which women don't typically need to supplement with when they are no longer menstruating.

Here at Cytoplan, we offer the best natural and effective supplements to support women through the menopause transition, which typically occurs between the ages of 45-55. Our phyto-oestrogen product provides a source of natural soy isoflavones, made from whole soy germ, which can elicit a gentle oestrogenic effect and support a number of symptoms attributed to the drop in oestrogen production at menopause. Oestrogen plays a role in maintaining healthy bone density, so it is important to provide the correct nutrition to support bone health before, during and after the menopause. Appropriate levels of calcium, magnesium, vitamin K2, vitamin D, boron and antioxidants are needed to support bone health, and we contain these natural nutrients in our synergistic and all-encompassing Bone Support supplement.

What are the best nutritional supplements for the elderly?

Ageing is related to a range of changes in the body, which may include muscle loss, thinning of the skin and a decrease in stomach acid, which can affect the absorption of key nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, calcium and magnesium. It is likely that older adults will need fewer calories, but more micronutrients, and the elderly can often be deficient in key health supportive nutrients such as selenium and vitamin D. Therefore, it is recommended to bridge the nutrition gap with a high-quality bioeffective multivitamin and mineral supplement in a food-based form.

Older people can often have a much lower number of friendly bacteria in their gut and can be more prone to gastrointestinal infections and bowel conditions, so it is recommended to support gut balance with a multi-strain live bacteria supplement.
