Menopause is a natural process, but its impact on daily life are anything but minor. Symptoms can be wide-ranging and unpredictable, often making the experience feel like navigating a minefield.

The Menopause Charity state that 33 million people in the Uk will experience menopause, yet only 49% feel well-informed about the topic.

One of the most common symptoms is brain fog, causing difficulty with memory, concentration and mental clarity. For many, it’s more than a nuisance; it’s a daily challenge that can deeply impact mental wellbeing. In fact, women are around 40% more likely to experience depression during this time.

What causes menopausal brain fog?

The simple answer is that brain fog is caused due to the decline in oestrogen levels that occurs during menopause. However, it's really much more than that.

People going through menopause may find that many different symptoms combine together to result in brain fog and it can vary person-to-person, for example:

Person 1:

  • Reduction in oestrogen triggers hot flushes

  • Hot flushes disrupt sleep

  • Poor sleep lowers energy

  • Low energy causes brain fog

Person 2:

  • Reduced oestrogen heightens trigeminal nerve sensitivity

  • Brain blood vessels widen, releasing inflammatory mediators

  • Inflammation and pain sensitivity cause migraines

  • Migraines impair focus and increase brain fog

Person 3:

  • Muscle and joint pain causes fatigue and distraction

  • This reduces motivation for movement and exercise which raises stress levels

  • Reduced oestrogen disrupts serotonin and dopamine, lowering mood

  • Low mood contributes to brain fog
