Vitamin C is a vital nutrient with multiple body functions. It is one of nature's great antioxidants and protects the body's cells from 'oxidative stress' caused by inflammation, energy metabolism or external damage such as from chemical exposure or UV sun damage. It helps to preserve key body proteins like collagen and elastin helping to maintain good connective tissue (joints/ligaments) and skin structure, reducing signs of ageing. It promotes immune system function, helping to fight infection. It helps cells produce energy and supports adrenal gland function (the body's stress shock absorbers), improving overall vitality.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and is low pH/acidic in nature. This is not normally a problem, as it's a natural acid, but when taking high or regular doses, or if the stomach is easily irritated, buffering the vitamin c to make it less acidic can help. Wholefood vitamin C or ascorbic acid buffered with a mineral such as calcium or magnesium (forming a mineral ascorbate) helps to increase the pH and reduce the acidity, making it much better tolerated.
