Vitamin A is a group of related essential fat-soluble nutrients, vital for growth and maintenance of the body's membranes including skin and the mucous membranes in the lungs and gut. it is also critical for healthy eye development and function, as component of rhodopsin, a protein in the retina that helps with night vision. It plays a role in iron metabolism, supporting red blood cells and so helping with energy levels, and is vital for normal immune system function, helping to protect against infection.
The body can obtain vitamin A directly from animal foods such as fish, liver or dairy foods, or can also convert beta carotene from fruits and vegetables (e.g., carrots). Vitamin A can be limited in a modern diet and some people may not convert from beta carotene as effectively as others, resulting in lower than optimal levels.
High dose vitamin A supplements are normally recommended for short to medium term use to increase levels, which can then be maintained by a multivitamin containing vitamin A or beta carotene.
