Sleep Nutrition
Poor sleep is a common complaint, population-based studies across multiple countries indicate that approximately 30% of people report one or more symptoms of disrupted sleep.
Inadequate sleep can have a serious and detrimental effect on our health – in the short term we may be hungrier and tired the next day and find it difficult to concentrate. In the longer term it can contribute to cognitive decline, a weakened immune system and many chronic diseases.
Sleep hygiene is a way of preparing the body for sleep, having routines every evening can help programme the body to know when it is sleep time. This also includes ensuring the bedroom is an appropriate temperature (not too hot), the bed and pillows are comfortable and screen-use is avoided in the hour before sleep.
A number of nutrients are needed to manufacture the neurotransmitters (i.e. brain chemicals) that are necessary for sleep.
