What is burnout?

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies burnout as:

"A syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed."

Although not a medical condition, it is recognised as a syndrome with a health related cause, and WHO has even called it an 'occupational phenomenon'.

Burnout can manifest in 3 key areas of day-to-day life:

1. Physical: Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion

2. Emotional: Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job

3. Behavioural: Reduced professional efficacy
