Blackcurrant seed oil is an excellent natural source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fat that's challenging to get from food alone. GLA is can also be obtained from evening primrose oil, borage oil or starflower oil. Blackcurrant seed oil boasts higher GLA levels compared to Evening Primrose Oil, with around 15% GLA versus 8-10%. Blackcurrant seed oil also contains other important oils including alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. It contains 13% omega-3 levels.
GLA is converted by the body into prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that help regulate various body processes, including inflammatory pathways and hormone balance. While the body can produce GLA from linoleic acid (LA), this process is often inefficient due to a lack of necessary enzymes. By supplementing with blackcurrant seed oil, you can bypass this conversion, allowing GLA to be effectively used by the body for health. GLA most notably supports healthy skin and hormonal balance.
